In the cold gloom

That lurks before sunrise,

I watch you walk through invisible doors

To mount an impossible bird

And ride it through the breaking day

And on into the night,

Your destination too far,

Your journey too fast,

For the slow tick of evolution to make sense of,

An implausible

Fifteen million strides.

I wait in the day that you left behind,

Hours twisted and distorted

As the distance grows between us.

Tomorrow, in another world,

You sleep

While I move through space,

Marking the passage of time.

Before you wake, I fall into an exhausted slumber

And dream of foreign scents,

A warm, sultry wind,

Strange faces painted in the exotic night.
